What is Massage Therapy?

"Massage therapy consists primarily of hands-on manipulation of the soft tissues of the body, specifically, the muscles, connective tissue, tendons, ligaments and joints for the purpose of optimizing health.  Massage therapy treatment has a therapeutic effect on the body and optimizes health and well-being by acting on the muscular, nervous and circulatory systems.  Physical function can be developed, maintained and improved; and physical dysfunction and pain and the effects of stress can be relieved or prevented through the use of Massage Therapy." www.cmto.com

What should I expect when I come for my first appointment? 

On your first visit, you will be asked to complete a confidential health-history form. Your therapist will go over your health-history form with you to determine your treatment needs and goals. First appointments are usually one-hour in length and include an assessment. After your first treatment, the duration and frequency of your visits will be based on your preference and your therapist’s recommendations.

Do I HAVE to include Laser and Ultrasound in my treatment?

No, it is your decision whether or not you would like to incorporate Laser or Ultrasound into your treatment.  You are encouraged to ask your RMT about the benefits of these modalities.

How many treatments will it take to notice improvement?

You will notice an overall sense of well being/relaxation after your first treatment because Massage Therapy affects your Nervous System.  However, your treatment plan will depend on your condition.  Typically the more severe and the longer the problem has been present,  the more frequent your treatments should be.  Your RMT will recommend a treatment plan for you, but ultimately the decision is yours.  Once a week for 4-6 weeks is most common and effective in helping improve specific conditions.  Then moving to treatments biweekly for 2-4 visits and so on.  For chronic pain conditions and overall wellness, a regular once a month maintenance program is ideal.  Remember, just because you are not in pain does not mean that your body is well/healthy.  

Am I expected to talk during my massage?

You are encouraged to give your feedback regarding pressure and symptoms periodically during your treatment.  Some people like to talk while others prefer silence.  Your RMT will respect your preference and talk if you talk, and be silent if you're silent.

Will I need to undress?

Massage Therapy is most effective when done directly on the skin, however you will be draped/covered for the whole treatment except for the individual area that's being worked on.  It is possible to treat over the clothes, so just tell your therapist what your comfort level is.


How will I feel after my massage?

After your massage, you should feel more relaxed, with less tightness and less discomfort. Your muscles will likely feel more relaxed and flexible. It is important to understand that you may still have some or your original symptoms (pain, discomfort, and soreness) following your treatment.  Massage therapy will not make you feel 100% better instantly, massage therapy will make you heal better faster.  Your body will respond to treatments more quickly the more often you have them.

You may experience DOMS (delayed onset muscle soreness) which should subside within 48-72 hours.  You may feel worse before you feel better.  This is very common and is nothing to worry about.  Your therapist will give you homecare exercises and remedies to help with the effects of your massage. If you are sore post massage, we recommend ice to areas that feel 'inflamed' and heat to areas where trigger points were worked on.  An epsom salts bath is recommended as well as drinking plenty of water.
